Antalya: Turkey Gateway to the Mediterranean

Antalya is Turkey most popular beach destination, attracting over 15 million tourists annually. Located on the stunning Turkish Riviera, it combines beautiful beaches, a charming old town, ancient ruins, and dramatic waterfalls. This guide covers everything you need to know for a perfect Antalya vacation.

Kaleiçi (Old Town)

The heart of Antalya is Kaleiçi, a beautifully preserved Ottoman-era old town within ancient Roman walls. Narrow cobblestone streets are lined with restored Ottoman houses, boutique hotels, art galleries, and restaurants. Key sights include Hadrian Gate (a 2nd-century Roman triumphal arch), Yivli Minaret (the symbol of Antalya), Kesik Minaret Mosque (originally a Roman temple), and the old harbor now filled with yachts and tour boats.

Best Beaches

Konyaaltı Beach is the main city beach stretching 7 km west of the center — a pebble beach with crystal-clear water and mountain backdrop. Lara Beach to the east has golden sand and all-inclusive resort hotels. Phaselis Beach (45 min drive) combines ancient ruins with a turquoise cove. Olympos/Çıralı Beach is a pristine stretch backed by ancient ruins and home to the eternal flames of Chimaera.

Waterfalls

Düden Waterfalls: The Upper Düden falls in a park setting, and the spectacular Lower Düden falls cascade 40 meters directly into the Mediterranean — best viewed from a boat tour. Kurşunlu Waterfall is set in a peaceful forest park with walking trails and picnic areas. Manavgat Waterfall (75 km east) is wide and powerful, surrounded by tea gardens.

Day Trips from Antalya

Perge: Ancient Greek and Roman city with an impressive stadium, colonnaded street, and baths (30 min drive). Aspendos: Home to the best-preserved Roman theater in the world — still used for concerts (50 min drive). Thermessos: A mountaintop ancient city in a dramatic setting in Güllük Mountain National Park (30 min drive). Side: A charming peninsula town with Roman temples, theater, and beaches (75 min drive). For the most comprehensive day trips with expert guides and transport, consider booking through a Turkey travel agency that specializes in the Mediterranean region.

Getting There & Around

Antalya Airport (AYT) is a major international hub with direct flights from across Europe. The tram system connects the airport to the city center and beaches. Renting a car is recommended for exploring the coast and ancient sites.
