Sultanahmet (Old City)

Best for: First-time visitors, history lovers, sightseeing. Walking distance to Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Grand Bazaar, and Topkapi Palace. More traditional and quiet at night. Hotels range from budget hostels to luxury boutique properties.

Taksim/Beyoğlu

Best for: Nightlife, shopping, modern dining. İstiklal Avenue offers vibrant nightlife, trendy restaurants, and contemporary culture. Better connected by metro. More lively atmosphere after dark.

Other Great Neighborhoods

Karaköy/Galata offers a hip, artsy vibe between Sultanahmet and Taksim. Kadıköy on the Asian side provides an authentic local experience. Beşiktaş is great for football fans and local culture.

Which area is better for families?

Sultanahmet is generally better for families due to its quieter evening atmosphere and proximity to major sights.

Can I easily travel between Sultanahmet and Taksim?

Yes! The T1 tram connects Sultanahmet to Kabataş in about 20 minutes, then a short funicular ride to Taksim. Total journey is about 30 minutes.

Sultanahmet for first-timers who want to be close to major historical sites. Taksim/Beyoglu for nightlife, restaurants, and a more modern vibe. Kadikoy on the Asian side if you want the local experience. All are well connected by public transport.

I stayed in Karakoy for a month and loved it. It is right between Sultanahmet and Taksim, has great cafes and street art, and the Galata Bridge is a 5-minute walk. More affordable than both tourist areas too.
