Understanding the Turkish Lira

The Turkish Lira (TRY/TL) has experienced significant depreciation in recent years, making Turkey extremely affordable for foreign visitors. Always check the current exchange rate before your trip as it changes frequently.

Cash vs Card

Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere in tourist areas — restaurants, shops, hotels, and even taxis. However, carry cash for small purchases, markets, and rural areas. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted; Amex less so.

Where to Exchange Money

ATMs offer the best exchange rates. Use bank ATMs (Garanti, İş Bankası, Yapı Kredi, Ziraat) and decline the "convert to your currency" option to get the better rate. Exchange offices (döviz) in the Grand Bazaar area offer competitive rates. Avoid airport exchange offices — they have the worst rates.

Should I exchange money before coming to Turkey?

No need — ATMs are everywhere and offer the best rates. Bring a debit card with low foreign transaction fees. Having 100–200 EUR/USD as emergency backup cash is sensible.

Always pay in Turkish Lira, never accept offers to charge in your home currency (Dynamic Currency Conversion is a ripoff). Use ATMs for the best exchange rate but avoid the ones inside the Grand Bazaar. Halkbank and Ziraat ATMs usually have the lowest fees for international cards.

The lira fluctuates a lot so do not exchange too much at once. Credit cards are widely accepted in Istanbul and tourist areas. Keep some cash for smaller shops, taxis, and bazaar shopping. Street exchange offices in Sultanahmet are usually fair.
