Topkapi Palace: The Heart of the Ottoman Empire

Topkapi Palace (Topkapı Sarayı) served as the primary residence of Ottoman sultans for nearly 400 years (1465-1856). Today it is one of Istanbul most-visited museums and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This guide covers everything you need to know for your visit in 2026.

Ticket Prices (2026)

Main palace entry: 750 TL (approximately 20 EUR). Harem section: 400 TL additional (approximately 10 EUR). Combined ticket: 1,100 TL (approximately 28 EUR). Museum Pass Istanbul covers entry. Children under 8 enter free. Buy tickets online at muze.gov.tr to skip the ticket line.

Opening Hours

Open every day except Tuesdays. April-October: 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (last entry 5:00 PM). November-March: 9:00 AM to 4:45 PM (last entry 4:00 PM). Arrive early — by 9:30 AM the queues can be very long.

What to See Inside

The palace complex has four courtyards, each more private and impressive than the last. The First Courtyard is free to enter and includes the Imperial Gate and Hagia Irene Church. The Second Courtyard houses the Imperial Council Hall (Divan) and the Palace Kitchens displaying Chinese porcelain and Ottoman cooking utensils. The Third Courtyard contains the most impressive sections: the Treasury (with the Topkapi Dagger, Spoonmaker Diamond, and throne of Nadir Shah), the Chamber of Holy Relics (Prophet Muhammad relics), and the Enderûn Library. The Fourth Courtyard has beautiful gardens and kiosks with stunning views of the Golden Horn and Bosphorus.

The Imperial Harem

The Harem is a must-see and requires a separate ticket. It contains over 300 rooms where the sultan, his mother (Valide Sultan), wives, concubines, and eunuchs lived. The most impressive rooms include the Imperial Hall, the Twin Kiosk, and the apartments of the Valide Sultan. The tilework throughout the Harem is extraordinary — some of the finest Iznik tiles ever produced.

Visitor Tips

Visit on a weekday morning for fewer crowds. Budget 2-3 hours for the main palace and 1 hour for the Harem. There is no photography allowed in the Treasury and some sections. The palace is vast — wear comfortable shoes. Audio guides are available at the entrance and well worth the cost. The palace courtyard café has reasonable prices and beautiful views.
