The Toilet Paper Question in Turkey
This is one of the most practical travel questions about Turkey. The answer depends on where you are. In most modern hotels, restaurants, and newer buildings, you can flush toilet paper. However, in older buildings, budget accommodations, and rural areas, you should use the bin provided.
How to Know Which System to Use
Look for a small waste bin next to the toilet — if one is present and clearly meant for paper, use it. If there is no bin, you can flush. When in doubt, ask your hotel staff. Many tourist-focused establishments now have modern plumbing that handles toilet paper.
Turkish Toilets (Squat Toilets)
Some public restrooms have traditional squat toilets (alaturka). These are becoming less common in tourist areas but you may encounter them in bus stations and older public facilities.
Do Turkish bathrooms have toilet paper?
Most tourist-friendly places provide toilet paper. Public restrooms may charge 3–5 TL for entry and provide paper. Carrying a small pack of tissues is always wise.
