How to Spend 3 Days in Istanbul
Three days is the sweet spot for a first visit to Istanbul. This detailed itinerary covers all the must-see attractions while leaving room for spontaneous exploration and street food breaks.
Day 1: Sultanahmet — The Historical Heart
Morning (9:00 AM): Start at Hagia Sophia early to beat the crowds. This 1,500-year-old masterpiece takes about 1-2 hours to explore. Buy tickets online in advance (25 EUR for foreigners in 2026).
Mid-Morning (11:00 AM): Walk across to the Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque). Entry is free but it closes during prayer times. Dress modestly — headscarves are provided at the entrance for women.
Lunch (12:30 PM): Head to the Arasta Bazaar behind the Blue Mosque for a quieter lunch. Try pide (Turkish flatbread) or İskender kebab at a local restaurant.
Afternoon (2:00 PM): Visit Topkapi Palace and its Harem section. Budget 2-3 hours. The palace treasury contains the famous Topkapi Dagger and Spoonmaker Diamond.
Late Afternoon (5:00 PM): Walk through Gülhane Park to the Istanbul Archaeology Museum. End the day watching sunset from the park benches overlooking the Golden Horn.
Evening (7:00 PM): Dinner in Sultanahmet. Try a traditional Turkish meze dinner with raki.
Day 2: Grand Bazaar, Spice Bazaar & Bosphorus
Morning (9:00 AM): Start at the Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) when it opens. The bazaar has over 4,000 shops across 61 covered streets. Focus on the inner streets for better quality items. Ceramics, leather, lanterns, and Turkish delight make great souvenirs.
Late Morning (11:30 AM): Walk downhill to the Spice Bazaar (Egyptian Bazaar). Buy Turkish delight, dried fruits, saffron, and Turkish tea. The streets around the bazaar are even more interesting than inside.
Lunch (1:00 PM): Grab a balık ekmek (fish sandwich) at Eminönü waterfront or eat at the historic Pandeli restaurant above the Spice Bazaar.
Afternoon (2:30 PM): Take the Bosphorus cruise. The public Şehir Hatları ferry departs from Eminönü — buy a full-length cruise (6 hours round trip) or the shorter 2-hour version. You will see Dolmabahçe Palace, Rumeli Fortress, and waterfront mansions (yalıs).
Evening (7:00 PM): Dinner in Karaköy or Balat neighborhoods for trendy restaurants with Bosphorus views.
Day 3: Modern Istanbul & Asian Side
Morning (9:30 AM): Start at Galata Tower for panoramic views of the city. Then walk down through the charming streets of Galata/Karaköy.
Mid-Morning (11:00 AM): Walk İstiklal Avenue from Tünel to Taksim Square. Stop at St. Antoine Church, fish market, and hidden passages (pasajlar).
Lunch (1:00 PM): Take the ferry from Eminönü or Karaköy to Kadıköy on the Asian side. The 20-minute ferry ride offers amazing views.
Afternoon (2:00 PM): Explore Kadıköy market streets — this is where locals shop and eat. Try midye dolma (stuffed mussels), kokoreç, and browse the vintage shops on Moda streets.
Late Afternoon (5:00 PM): Walk along Moda coastline for views of the European skyline. Have Turkish tea at a seaside café.
Evening (7:00 PM): Ferry back to the European side. Farewell dinner at a rooftop restaurant with Bosphorus or Golden Horn views.
