Common Safety Concerns
Petty crime (pickpocketing, bag snatching) exists in crowded tourist areas but is not worse than other European cities. Taxi scams (rigged meters, long routes) are the most common tourist complaint — use apps. Carpet shop touts can be persistent but harmless.
Areas to Be Cautious
The eastern border regions near Syria and Iraq should be avoided. Most western governments advise against travel to within 10 km of the Syrian border. The rest of Turkey, including all major tourist destinations, is considered safe.

Yes, with standard precautions. Dress modestly in conservative areas, avoid walking alone in deserted areas late at night, and trust your instincts. Many solo female travelers visit Turkey without issues.
Is Turkey safe for LGBTQ+ travelers?
While homosexuality is legal in Turkey, public displays of affection between same-sex couples may attract unwanted attention outside of liberal areas like Istanbul's Beyoğlu district. Exercise discretion.
