Dolmabahçe Palace: Ottoman Grandeur on the Bosphorus

Dolmabahçe Palace (Dolmabahçe Sarayı) is the most opulent palace in Turkey, built in 1856 as the new residence of Ottoman sultans who wanted a European-style palace to replace the medieval Topkapi. It sits directly on the Bosphorus shore in the Beşiktaş district and is famous for being where Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey, spent his last days.

Ticket Prices (2026)

Full palace tour: 650 TL (approximately 17 EUR). Harem and concubine quarters: 400 TL additional. Combined ticket: 1,000 TL. Clock Tower and garden: free. The Museum Pass Istanbul does NOT cover Dolmabahçe — you need a separate ticket. Buy online at millisaraylar.gov.tr to skip queues.

Opening Hours

Open every day except Monday and Thursday. October-March: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. April-September: 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Last entry is one hour before closing. Arrive early as the palace limits daily visitors and guided tours fill up fast.

What to See

The palace has 285 rooms, 46 halls, 6 baths, and 68 toilets. The Ceremonial Hall (Muayede Salon) features the world largest Bohemian crystal chandelier weighing 4.5 tons with 750 lamps — a gift from Queen Victoria. The crystal staircase has banisters made of Baccarat crystal. The Sultan reception room has a bear-skin rug and European furniture. Atatürk room, where he died on November 10, 1938, has all clocks stopped at 9:05 AM, the time of his death.

Visitor Tips

Tours are guided and mandatory — you cannot wander freely. Tours last approximately 60-90 minutes. Photography is NOT allowed inside the palace. The palace garden is beautiful and free to enter. There is a café by the Bosphorus that is lovely for a post-visit tea. The palace is easily reached by tram (T1 line, Kabataş stop) or a short walk from Beşiktaş ferry terminal.
