Visiting the Princes Islands

The Princes Islands (Adalar) are a group of nine islands in the Sea of Marmara, just a ferry ride from Istanbul. The four main islands — Büyükada, Heybeliada, Burgazada, and Kınalıada — offer a peaceful escape from the city with no cars allowed.

How to Get There

Ferries depart from Kabataş and Bostancı. The ride to Büyükada (the largest island) takes about 90 minutes from Kabataş. Use your IstanbulKart — the ferry fare is the same as regular public transport (about 20 TL).

What to Do on Büyükada

Rent an electric bike or take a phaedon (horse carriage) tour around the island. Visit the Aya Yorgi Church and Monastery at the hilltop for panoramic views. Enjoy seafood at waterfront restaurants. The island has beautiful Victorian-era wooden mansions.

Which island should I visit?

Büyükada is the most popular with the most to see. Heybeliada is quieter and has beautiful beaches. Visit Büyükada if you only have time for one island.

Buyukada is the largest and most popular island. Take the ferry from Kabatas (about 90 minutes). Since motor vehicles are banned, you explore by walking, biking, or electric vehicles. Pack a picnic and enjoy the Victorian-era mansions and pine forests.

Go on a weekday if possible - weekends are very crowded. Heybeliada is my favorite island as it is less touristy than Buyukada. The ferry ride itself is beautiful and worth the trip. Use your Istanbulkart for the ferry.
